The performance and potential matrix, commonly referred to as “the nine box”tool, is a simple yet effective tool used in risk management. The assessment focus on two dimensions: Severity (S) and Likelihood of Occurrence (O). The X axis (horizontal line) of 3 boxes assesses Severity and the Y axis of 3 boxes (vertical line) assesses Occurrence. A combination of Y and X axis makes up the box within the grid that the risk level is defined (As shown in below table).
Occurrence and severity can be rated as “Low”, “Medium” and “High” to determine the overall risk rating as the example shown below. The definition and rating baseline of “Low”, “Medium” and “High” are typically decided by the project team.
